As of April 2026, POL trades near $0.093 with a circulating supply of approximately 369.84 million tokens out of a total 9.97 billion. POL serves two primary functions within the Polygon ecosystem. First, it acts as the gas token for the Polygon PoS chain — every transaction on the network requires a small amount of POL to cover fees. Second, POL is used for staking: validators and delegators lock up tokens to participate in the Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism and earn staking rewards in return.

A key difference between the old MATIC token and the new POL token is multi-chain staking capability. POL was designed to support staking across multiple Polygon-based chains simultaneously through the Agglayer protocol. This means a single validator can help secure several networks at once, earning rewards from each. POL holders are also eligible for Agglayer ecosystem airdrops.

The POL/USD price is closely correlated with Ethereum's performance, given that Polygon serves as Ethereum's primary scaling layer. Major DeFi protocols on Polygon including Aave, Uniswap, and QuickSwap generate ongoing transaction fee demand for POL. The token's price performance is expected to improve if Ethereum's user base grows and Layer-2 adoption continues to accelerate through 2026 and beyond.
